The Golf VII shared a platform with the third-generation Audi A3, SEAT León, and Škoda Octavia. It was bigger than the Mk6 but 200 pounds lighter. The GTI version offered a 207 hp turbocharged 2-liter engine with 217 hp. The Golf R had 292 hp with an all-wheel drive.

In November 2016, a facelifted version was debuted by Volkswagen. A new, more economical engine, a 1.5-liter TSI EVO with 130 hp, replaced the 1.4-liter TSI. The new GTI version had 230 hp standard; 247 hp optionally. A 12.3″ TFT display was optional, called the Virtual Cockpit featuring LED lights and animated tail indicators as used in Audis.

The most muscular Golf was the Golf R, powered by a 2.0 L turbocharged inline-four engine producing 296 bhp for the USA market. 0-62 mph was reached in 5.1 seconds or 4.9 seconds with the optional DSG gearbox. The top speed is 155 mph.

There was a Rabbit Edition for the US market in 2019. This edition included LED lighting, a spoiler, 18-inch gloss black wheels, sunroof delete, and Rabbit logoed plaid seats.

Production of the Volkswagen Golf VII finished In Mexico in 2021.

Wolfsburg revealed the Mk8 Golf in 2019. It uses a version of the MQB platform; gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engine options. The five-door hatchback is the only model available; the three-door hatchback was discontinued because of poor sales. There is an important change to the driver’s display and a new digital control panel. All have forward-looking safety features like travel assist, Car2X, and an automatic braking function. These are the first to be used on a production VW model.

The latest powertrains have three ETSI hybrid, and two plug-in hybrid engines besides preexisting TSI petrol, TDI diesel, and TGI compressed natural gas options. All TSI engines are turbocharged and have the TSI Miller combustion process with variable turbocharger geometry. The 1.5-liter engines feature Active Cylinder Management. ETSI models feature a 12 V electrical system and a 48 V belt starter generator driven by a lithium-ion battery Hybrid models feature a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery competent to run as an EV. TDI models have a new twin dosing SCR system with dual AdBlue catalytic reduction, lowering NOx emissions up to 80% compared to other vehicles. Still, existing performance models are GTE, GTI, GTD, and Golf R. The GTE and GTI make 240 hp; the GTD produces 197 hp, and the R is top of the hill at 315 hp. The Mk7 e-Golf is replaced by the ID.3.
