POWERTRAIN

A direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission had a maximum output of 310 hp at 6,500 rpm and 272 lb.-ft of torque. To save fuel, the engine worked in 6 or 3-cylinder configurations; new engine mounts were engineered for the latest model to lower noise, vibration, and harshness.

Hybrid models fused a start-stop system for better fuel economy. The transmission had 7-speeds hooked to a 47-horsepower electric motor. 36-horsepower electric motors powered the rear wheels. A 72-cell battery pack gave an output of 377 horsepower. Fuel economy was improved to 29 mpg.

CHASSIS

Aluminum was used in the front subframe to save weight. The shock absorbers used Acura’s Amplitude Reactive Damper technology for a vastly improved ride. Standard wheels were 18-inch, with 19-inch wheels optional. Sporty Suspension tuning was used rather than tuning for comfort.

INTERIOR

Leather heated and cooled front seats were available on specific option package models, along with significantly improved rear legroom. Standard equipment included an 8-inch navigation screen and a 7-inch touchscreen for audio and climate tuning. The base system had ten speakers. Other options included a 14-speaker Krell audio system. A 14-speaker ELS Studio Premium system was also optional. Hybrid models had an electronic transmission gear selector, heads-up display, HUD, layered glass in all doors and the windshield, and a navigation system. Also standard was a keyless and push-button start.

EXTERIOR

The RLX had standard LED headlamps with ten polished lenses. Aluminum was used for the hood, front fenders, and outer door panels, saving 79 lbs over steel components. The hybrid had standard LED fog lamps.

SAFETY

Backup multi-angle rear-view cameras came standard on all models, as was the Forward Collision Warning system (FCW) and lane departure warning. Precrash automatic braking in the front was available, along with lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control. For 2016 an optional Surround View 360-degree camera was offered. Also standard was brake hold control to hold the car at a stop without using the brake pedal, along with electronic stability control.

FACELIFT

For the 2018 sales year, the updated RLX featured a diamond pentagon grille, new front and rear fascia, different LED tail and headlights, redesigned wheels, a new hood, and chrome exhaust pipes. Interior changes included new front seats, steering wheel, dash trim, and color options. New standard safety features included Traffic Jam Assist and blind spot monitoring. Also new for the front-wheel-drive version was a 10-speed automatic transmission.

DISCONTINUATION

The last year for the RLX was 2020. Acura now focuses on sports sedans and crossovers. The TLX is now Acura’s top-of-the-line sedan. The 2021 TLX is “the quickest, best-handling, and most well-appointed Acura sedan.”
