1. Transmission Issues

A Mercedes G-Class transmission should shift effortlessly, whether you’re tackling city streets or climbing rugged trails. When it starts jerking, hesitating, or slipping, it’s a warning sign that something isn’t right.

Older G500 and G550 models often develop delayed shifting, rough gear changes, or total transmission failure due to internal wear, failing torque converters, or low transmission fluid levels.

Newer AMG G63 models with the 9-speed transmission have their own issues—some drivers experience a harsh downshift from second to first gear, causing a jolt that feels like getting rear-ended.

Newer G63 models from 2019 and up use adaptive damping suspension, which—when working properly—adjusts to road conditions in real time. But when it fails, the ride turns stiff, uncomfortable, and unpredictable.
