Problems with the electrical system

The Nissan Pathfinder is known to have some minor issues concerning its electrical system. The problems were more prevalent when the battery was nearing the end of its life. The main problems that some owners faced included power windows not rolling up or down and the power locks malfunctioning. When the power locks malfunctioned, the automatic locking mechanism was triggered and people were unable to unlock their doors using their key fab. Instead, they had to use their key manually to open the doors to get their vehicle to a mechanic who could resolve the issue.

Transmission issues

Some owners of older Nissan Pathfinders reported transmission issues right around the 100,000-mile mark. The suspected cause of the transmission issues was a coolant leak that leaked coolant into the transmission mixing the coolant with the transmission fluid. However, it is important to note that because of this, Nissan has focused on addressing this issue in newer models of the Pathfinder and reports of transmission issues have decreased significantly.

Coolant leaks

Minor coolant leaks may not be a big issue. Typically, owners of Nissan Pathfinders that experience minor coolant leaks only need to make sure their coolant levels are sufficient by topping off the reservoir periodically. However, it is important to address coolant leaks before they become a bigger problem that causes the engine to overheat and potentially causes the head gasket to crack. Also, if the coolant is leaking in a way where the coolant can get inside the transmission and mix with the transmission fluid, it can potentially cause significant damage to the transmission.

Problems with the anti-lock braking system

Some Nissan Pathfinders have been known to leak brake fluid from the anti-lock braking system. A leak of brake fluid from the ABS can be potentially dangerous by causing the brakes to not work as well or fail entirely. Brakes need the hydraulic fluid to operate properly, and if the brake fluid is low or absent, the brakes may not work at all.
