Start With the Stored SCR Fault

Diesel Sprinters equipped with DEF and SCR use NOx sensors, heaters, pumps, dosing injectors, and wiring to manage emissions-fluid delivery. A fault in one part can produce an emissions warning, reduced power, or a restart countdown. We read the Mercedes-specific SCR faults and compare the NOx readings first. DEF quality, commanded pump and injector operation, heater function, and wiring checks then narrow the cause. The engine and generation matter because NCV3 and VS30 hardware and warning logic differ. We replace the failed sensor, heater, pump, injector, wiring section, or related component, complete the required initialization, and confirm correct dosing during a road test.

A Full Cold Soak Recreates a Glow-System Complaint

Diesel cylinders rely on glow-system preheat during a cold start. An open glow plug or weak control module can produce long cranking, rough starting, smoke, or a stored circuit fault. We read the cylinder-specific faults and measure each plug's resistance and current draw. Module power, ground, and output tests show whether the controller is supplying the expected current. We also check battery condition and engine compression because either one can change cranking quality. The findings determine whether the repair needs glow plugs, the control module, or work elsewhere. After the repair, a full cold soak lets us repeat the same starting condition that exposed the problem.

Where a Charge-Air Leak Leaves Its Mark

Depending on the Sprinter engine and generation, the charge-air path can include hoses, seals, connections, a resonator, and the intercooler. A crack or loose joint can release boost and leave hissing, oily residue, weak acceleration, or a P0299 fault. We compare requested boost with measured boost while the van is under load. We use oily tracks to choose where the physical inspection begins. We then pressure-test the complete path from the turbocharger to the intake. Routing changes among Sprinter generations and engines, so we use the VIN to choose the parts. We replace the leaking hose, seal, connection, resonator, clamp, or intercooler and confirm the restored boost under load.

Chuffing Near an Injector Can Come From the Copper Seal

A failed copper seal can let combustion gas escape around a diesel injector. The escaping gas bakes carbon around the injector seat, which can create chuffing, odor, rough running, and difficult injector removal. We inspect the injector area for soot and listen for pulsing leakage around the seat. We use correction values or leak-off data to check for an internal injector fault. We extract the affected injector and clean the carbon from the seat area. When the seat condition requires re-facing, we complete that step before installing a new seal and fastener. We leak-test the finished repair and code a replacement injector only when testing shows injector damage.

Using the Highest Wet Point to Separate Two Oil Leaks

The OM642 3.0-liter V6 diesel places its oil cooler in the engine valley. Hardened cooler seals can let oil run toward the bellhousing, where the wet area resembles a rear-main-seal leak. We clean the engine and locate the highest wet point before opening the valley. The filter housing, turbo inlet, and rear main seal stay in view during that inspection. Access requires removal of the intake components above the cooler. Once the cooler seals are the source, we replace them with the disturbed gaskets and clean the valley. This repair scope applies primarily to North American OM642 Sprinters from 2007 through 2018, and we verify the result after a road test.
