CRAKED FUEL PUMP

Cracked fuel pumps are a big problem in the fuel system. The cracks can cause leaks, allow air into the fuel intake system, and a wide range of other problems.

Unfortunately, cracking also isn’t the only problem with the fuel pump in the Honda Insight, and there is a recall out for impeller problems as well.

Fuel pump issues can sometimes be difficult to spot, so usually the first sign is that the check engine light will come on and give a fuel pump warning code when read.

You may also notice excessive fuel smell, either in the cabin or when you’re near your Insight depending on the severity of the crack and other issues.

Regardless of the first signs of the problem, it’s important to get your Insight to a mechanic as soon as possible to get the fuel pump replaced before the problem gets worse.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION

Excessive oil consumption is another common problem with the Insight line, and it’s also a difficult problem to diagnose. Drivers may not notice the problem right away unless they find themselves dealing with low oil warnings and constantly needing to refill the engine oil between changes.

However, because this problem is hard to diagnose, it can also be difficult and expensive to fix, with some people opting to replace the engine entirely rather than continuing to deal with a difficult-to-find and difficult-to-fix oil problem.

FAULTY AIRBAGS

There is a known issue with the Honda Insight SRS system that can, in some cases, interfere with airbag function.

The issue also interferes with seatbelt pre-tensioning, which can mean that seatbelt tension, and whether the seatbelts respond appropriately to sudden stops, can be a sign of whether or not your SRS system and the airbags are impacted.

The fix for this problem is getting the SRS unit replaced. There is a recall for some affected models, which means you may be able to get the work taken care of at a licensed Honda Dealer.

CHEWED ELECTRICAL WIRES

Because Honda, like several other companies, uses a soy-based wiring cover, there is a known issue where rodents and other animals are a little more likely to chew on the wires. Since chewed wires are more likely to fail and can be broken apart entirely, this can be a serious issue depending on where you live and how well you’re able to protect your vehicle.

However, in most cases, wiring problems are a relatively simple fix for your mechanic. The problem is that it can be hard to tell right away until a system stops working, and there isn’t a good way to predict what wiring is going to be chewed.

That means that the problem could be as simple as the A/C failing because the wires are disconnected, to almost any other electrical system with independent wiring failing.

DROPPED BEAM HEADLIGHT MALFUNCTION

Dipping your headlights can be a useful way to direct where the light from your headlights is going, which means that this is one of the Insight features many drivers like best about their vehicles.

However, there is a known issue with the headlight switch that can cause this system to fail when triggered, leading to headlight misalignment.

The fix is to replace the switch with a new modified version that holds the headlights better and responds to the changed setting better as well.
