POWERSHIFT TRANSMISSION ISSUES
The model years between 2012 and 2016 saw issues with the power shift transmission. This dual-clutch automatic transmission was notoriously problem-prone and even became the focus of a class action lawsuit in which millions of customers demanded compensation. The worst years for the transmission were between 2012-2014, with lingering issues remaining through 2016.
When the power shift transmission begins to have issues, drivers noted that the car would shudder when accelerating (especially from a standstill) and have rough upshifts that were felt through the steering wheel. This makes the car unsafe to drive, especially if it’s shuddering and losing power in higher-speed situations such as on the highway.
Replacing the clutch and the transmission control module doesn’t seem to solve this issue, which is why Ford upgraded the warranty on the affected modules. The powertrain runs to 100,000 miles or 7 years, providing owners with some recourse if their vehicle begins suffering from the same issue.
IGNITION DIFFICULTIES
Another widely reported problem when it comes to Ford Focuses has to do with the ignition. There are several complaints when it comes to the ignition, including the key being unable to turn the ignition, an inability to remove the key from the ignition, and a locked steering wheel. None of these complaints are conducive to a reliable car, as you can’t get to work with a locked wheel or an ignition that won’t turn.
Many of these issues were prevalent in the older models, including the models from 2001-2005. Despite a significant number of drivers being affected by these problems, were was never a recall for the ignition. To solve the aforementioned problems, the ignition usually needs to be replaced.
STALLING ENGINE
On some Ford Focus SE models, there is an issue with the intake of air into the engine, leading to a stalling problem. This issue may also be related to an ignition problem, though not as commonly.
Repairs include a replacement of the mass airflow sensor, which is a relatively inexpensive fix. This can run drivers a few hundred dollars to read and solve the erroneous code errors that are resulting in the stalled engine. A check engine light diagnostic test can be run at a reputable vehicle shop and the resulting code will determine what the best course of action is to get the car reliably running once again.
