TRANSMISSION FAILURE
Issues with the transmission are common complaints with the 2008 year model, though they plague other years as well. The transmission may suddenly shut down while the vehicle is in motion, creating a dangerous situation for the driver and others on the road. This problem typically occurs at around 80,000 miles and costs thousands to rebuild or replace.
Transmissions slipping or making unusual noises, such as clunking, are an indicator that you should get it into the shop ASAP. When a transmission begins to slip, this causes the system to select and deselect gears without input from the driver. A diagnostic test can be run to determine the cause of the noise and the slippage.
FAULTY AIRBAGS
Airbags are key to your safety in the event of a crash. Malfunctioning airbags can fail the moment they’re needed the most, which is why you should ensure that yours are properly functioning. On the 2016-2017 Edge, Ford recalled the vehicle due to airbag malfunctions. The airbags were cited as failing to fully inflate or detach from the assembly.
Airbag malfunction was also a problem in the 2007-2008 model year due to bad airbag inflators. Affected vehicles can be taken to any dealer for a free airbag replacement.
DOOR AJAR LIGHT
Electrical issues are common complaints among Ford Edge owners and the door ajar light staying on even when the door was closed is an oft-cited issue. Leaving this problem unaddressed can lead to battery drain, which requires a more expensive replacement.
Ford Edge year models from 2011 to 2013 frequently had the illuminated door ajar light that failed to turn off. This may result in other electrical components beginning to malfunction, such as the key fob or dome lights. Bring your car in to have the sensor checked and any faulty components within the electrical system replaced.
FAULTY BRAKE BOOSTER
The brake booster was an issue with the 2007 and 2015 models on the Ford Edge but has been cited among other years as well. One sign of a faulty brake booster includes a stiff brake pedal, making it more difficult to apply the brake on the vehicle. You may notice an increased braking distance compared to what you were previously used to, as well as a hissing noise when the brake is pressed.
It’s imperative to seek repair immediately before the brake booster fails entirely. Repairs can run between $500 and $700, averaging out at around $600. Technicians can inspect the check valve to diagnose the problem, before removing the faulty components and replacing them.
