Transmission

There are several known, albeit minor, transmission issues with the 2005-2015 Chevrolet Impala. The most frequently cited is the pressure control solenoid, which tends to be a common occurrence after 100,000 miles. Since the solenoid controls several transmission functions, the symptoms will vary, but they usually include a combination of erratic gear shifting, jerking during acceleration, and a shift lever stuck in gear. In the case of the latter, it will be difficult to remove the key from the ignition. Unrelated to the above are leaking transmission fluid lines, especially in higher mileage vehicles. This tends to occur near the fittings and can lead to expensive transmission damage should the fluid level get too low.

Loss of Power Steering

Power steering is often taken for granted, at least until it stops working. If you have tried to turn the steering wheel with the vehicle turned off, you will quickly appreciate it. While this does not happen frequently, some Impala owners have reported the power steering suddenly failed when driving. However, it can be a dangerous situation, as considerable effort is needed to steer the vehicle. In most cases, the culprit is a leaking power steering fluid line, especially on 2010s models. Likewise, it is not unusual for leaks to develop over time, and the system should be inspected regularly on higher-mileage vehicles.
 Fortunately, you usually have some warning signs that the fluid level is low, the most obvious being a puddle of fluid underneath the vehicle. In addition, a whining sound can be heard when turning the steering wheel at low speeds.

Accelerator Position Power Steering

A faulty APP sensor affected multiple GM vehicles, including the 2009-2011 Chevrolet Impala. The issue was a bad solder connection, which caused the sensor to stop working and trigger a “safe mode” in the engine control module. Should that occur, performance is noticeably reduced, especially during acceleration. In addition to the decreased engine power, the check engine will be illuminated with a corresponding diagnostic code of P2138.

Leaking Water Pump

The water pump is sometimes regarded as a worn item, and chances are it will need to be replaced around 100,000 miles, although some owners have stated theirs lasted just half that. As they are fairly simple devices, a water pump failure usually refers to a coolant leak at the pump shaft seal or where it attaches to the engine block. Should that happen, you may notice coolant underneath the engine on the passenger’s side. Other warning signs include a low coolant level and a temperature gauge reading higher than normal. In this case, the water pump should be replaced as soon as possible since a low coolant level will cause the vehicle to overheat, leading to costly engine repairs.

Routine Maintenance

Overall, the Chevrolet Impala, especially the 2014-2020 models, are excellent sedan with above-average reliability. Keeping up with routine maintenance can help ensure that your vehicle provides years of trouble-free service.
